Which
parts of the body generate kinetic energy ?
Kinetic energy can mainly be exploited from parts of the body providing
the biggest motion amplitude, as are legs and arms.
Are
kinetic generators efficient ?
The energy produced by legs, for instance represent between 5 and 8 watts;
yet kinetic generators efficiency hardly reach 50%. This is why only energy
efficient devices - such as electrotherapy devices - can be powered by this
process.
What
is electrotherapy?
Electrotherapy is the use of low-level electrical stimulation of the peripheral
nervous system to override pain or to induce muscle contractions. Electrotherapy
provides patients with an alternative for pain relief and rehabilitation.
Our products exploit a specific technic of electrotherapy called Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS).
What
is TENS?
TENS is the application of electrical stimulation for pain relief. An everyday
example can help explain how TENS works. Consider what happens if you burn
a finger and then place it under cold water. The cold water masks the pain
from the burn. TENS works in a similar way by using mild electrical stimulation
to reduce the transmission of pain messages.
How
does TENS work ?
TENS technology uses electrodes placed on very specific locations in order
to act on relevant muscles.
Does
it have long-term effects ?
Yes, because TENS also relieves pain in a second way. If a TENS device is
set at an intensity that causes mild muscle twitching, the body will produce
its own natural pain reliever, a neurohormone called endorphin. Endorphin
interacts with receptors along the nerve pathway and blocks the perception
of pain. When the body has been creating its own endorphin, pain gets less
important.
Doesn't
it harm my body ?
While using TENS devices, there are very little risks of damage because
it acts on a transcutaneous way - and not directly on the muscles. There
are some recommandations yet, about not using such devices with other electronical
body supports (pacemaker, insuline dispenser...). There are no risks of
addiction neither.
When
is TENS effective?
TENS is for the symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable
pain and for post-surgical and post-trauma acute pain.
